DIRECTIONS
Welcome to all new hound trailers and visitors who may wish to attend a hound trail during your visit to this unique County. Hound trailing is a unique and traditional sport to the County of Cumbria, so come and enjoy an afternoon/evening trail with people who are passionate about their sport.
Hopefully we can direct you to the nearest trail to where you are staying :
Askam in Furness
From A595 Grizebeck - Follow sign posts marked Barrow, Askam, Dalton continue along the road through Grizebeck Village, Kirkby and Soutergate continue along the road on your left passing a group of barn conversions close to the road, continue past these properties into the narrows take your first right at the small holding adjoining the road, follow the lane to the trail field.
From A590 Dalton/Askam roundabout, follow sign post to Askam follow A595 through Ireleth, follow the road passing through Paradise on your right continue along and take your first left at the small holding adjoing the road, follow the lane o the trail field.
Coniston
From South Lakes take A5084 from Lowick and follow road through to Torver at the junction with A593 turn right and head towards Coniston, enter the village, taking a left turn just before reaching the petrol station, follow the road upto the fell gate, go through the fell gate and enter the trail field.
From Ambleside, take A593 from Ambleside to Coniston on entering the village follow road towards Torver/Broughton, on your left will be the petrol station take your next right, follow the road upto the fell gate, go through the fell gate and enter the trail field.
Cartmel/Cartmel Show
From A590 Furness Direction, turn right at sign post marked Haverthwaite follow B5278 through village toward Holker, you will cross bridge (River Leven) take your first left marked Low Wood follow the road through past Bigland Hall Sports Centre continue along the road passing through High Gateside Farm and Beck Side continue along and you will come to a small terrace of houses just beyond these houses on your right is a turning to Hard Crag Farm, cross the cattle grid and you are on the trail field.
From A590 High Newton Junction follow sign posts for Cartmel, turn left at junction passing Broughton Lodge, at the next junction continue left and head towards Cartmel, turn right at Pig and Whistle follow road to junction take next right into Village Square ahead you will see the famous Sticky Toffee Pudding Shop follow the road to the right (90 degress turn) passing Cartmel Race Course, follow the road pass junction to Howbarrow and take next left over the cattle grid.
Mill Riggs/Kentmere
From A590 north take left into Staveley travelling along Windermere Road at the Village Hall take a left turn follow road (Brow Foot Lane) take second right turn over river into Elfhowe follow the road to Mill Riggs, Kentmere Hall continue to Kentmere village passing the church take left onto Hodgsons Brow (Kentmere Hall)
From A590 south take right into Staveley travelling along Kendal Road and Main Street take right at Village Hall follow as above
Staveley Head
From A590 north take left into Staveley travelling along Windermere Road at the Village Hall take a left turn follow road (Brow Foot Lane) take first right turn over river take left Hall Lane continue along road when you arrive at Park House continue along unmade track until you arrive at trail field.
From A590 south take right into Staveley travelling along Kendal Road and Main Street take right at Village Hall follow as above
Soot Box/Old Racecourse
From south A591 pass turn off for Barrow/South Lakes continue towards Kendal passing Sizergh Castle (two small entrances) continue on A591 take your first left onto Whetstone Lane (narrow lane minimal passing places) pass through farm buildings and continue to junction with Brigsteer Road, turn right and follow the road trail field on your left roughly 2 km, Old Racecourse slightly further on
From north enter Kendal alon Wiindermere Road take first right onto Queens Road (be careful speed humps) at junction continue across onto Bankfield Road take right (follow signs to Brigsteer), follow road up the hill crossing A591 Old Racecourse on your right continue past to Soot Box at the far end of the field.
Cunswick Fell
From south enter Kendal passing Kendal College follow signs to Kendal town centre once on one way system take first left onto Gillinggate, follow the road upto the junction with Greenside take left and continue along Underbarrow Road passing Kendal Fell Quarry and A591 continue along Bankfield House will be on your right just next to the property is a public footpath sign follow this onto trail field
From north enter Kendal alon Wiindermere Road take first right onto Queens Road (be careful speed humps) at junction turn right follow the road upto the junction with Greenside take left and continue along Underbarrow Road passing Kendal Fell Quarry and A591 continue along Bankfield House will be on your right just next to the property is a public footpath sign follow this onto trail field (usually young Jack Dawson is on the gate, he does a valuable job in helping you through the gate)
Shap
From Kendal/Juntion 39 M6 - Take the A6 follow sign posts to Shap Village pass turning to motorway junction 39 (on right) take first left to Wet Sleddale.
From Penrith A6 follow sign post to Shap Village travel through the village head towards junction 39 motorway exit, before junction take first right to Wet Sleddale.
Helton
From south either turn off in Shap VIllage and follow signs to Brampton and Helton, take left into Helton VIllage and sharp left onto fell road or continue through shap to the village of Hackthorpe on leaving the village take first left New Road cross at cross road and follow road down through Lowther Castle (crossing both cattle grids and chapel) follow road into Askham village at junction turn left to Helton take first right and right again, follow road onto the fell trails just on road side.
From north follow directions from Hackthorpe obviously turning right at first turning. Other route are available from A66.
Shap Summit
From south continue from Kedal along A6 follow road to shap summit continue down and take a left follow track to trail field.
From north from Shap village follow signs to Kendal along A6 pass Shap Wells Hotel entrance on the left follow track to trail field.
Lowick/Lowick Show
From A595 coming from the west, head towards Lowick, passing through Gawthwaite head down the hill to Woodgate take first left follow the road through and before reaching Lowick Church you will arrive at the trail field.
From east turn right at Lowick Green along A5084, follow the road until you see the Red Lion Public House, turn left follow the road past the chuch, trail field on your right in front of Lowick Hall.
Ambleside Sports
From south A591 continue through Ambleside on leaving Ambleside turn right along lane, usually sign posted for Hound Cars
From north A591 before take last entrance onto sports field (closest to Ambleside) usually sign posted for Hound Cars
Grasmere Sports - Field accessed from A591
From south A591 take left onto sports field marked Hound cars
From north A591 take right onto sports field marked Hound cars
Ings
From south A591 enter Ings village (mind speed cameras) take second right onto Mislet Brow trail field on right
From north pass through WIndermere enter Ings Village take first left (mind speed cameras) onto Mislet Brow trail field on right
Hawkeshead/Hawkeshead Show
From south follow sign posts from Newby Bridge to Hawkeshead turn left at junction into VIllage follow road heading towards Ambleside (B5285) show field on right
From north Ambleside follow signs to Coniston, at Clappersgate turn left on B5286 follow road through to Hawkeshead show field on left just before entering Hawkeshead
Rusland/Rusland Show
From south turn right at Penny Bridge and follow the road through passing Colton and Oxen Park continue along till you reach Whitestock Meadow on your right
From north take right turn at Haverthwiate road at junction turn right follow road along passing through woodland once out Rusland hamlet will be in front of you, take left through houses and follow road through keeping to your left at junction turn left show field on your left
Haverigg
From south leave A595 and follow signs to Millom (A5093) pass Ghyll Scaur Quarry on your right just beyond is Low House take right onto lane (by-passing Millom) at junction turn right and next left (barn at junction) enter Haverigg Village turn right onto North Lane (follow signs HMS Prison Haverigg), pass prison, trail field straight ahead.
From north turn off A5093 turn at barn and follow instructions above.
Cold Fell Gate
From South leave A595 at Calderbridge follow signs to Ennerdale over fell road (Cold Fell), passing Calder Abbey, Beckcote Farm crossing your second cattle grid the trail field is 1/2 mile on your left.
From North follow signs towards Ennerdale follow signs for Low Cock How Riding Centre once on the fell road continue along passing the stone circle and standing stones the trail field is on your right (roughly 8 miles from Ennerdale).
Lazonby
From South leave M6 at junction 41 take third junction (B5305) continue to next roundabout turn left and join the A6 continue along passing through village of Plumpton continue along on your left you will pass veterinary centre on your left take next right you will pass a small hamlet which includes a garden centre continue down the road at the bottom of the hill turn right across the cattle grid and follow track to trail field.
From North follow the A6 passing High Hesketh follow road along and take a right turn at the houses follow above
Grange in Borrowdale
Most people will be following from the Keswick direction you need to be on B5289 Borrowdale Road follow this until you get to the small settlement of Grange take a right over the stone bridge follow the road through and take a right close to the last house follow the lane to the trail field.
Keswick Old Golf Course
Leave A66 at roundabout with A66, A591, A5271 turning onto Crosthwaite Road (as if entering Keswick) take first left onto Brundholme Road take a left and the trail field is just on your left.
Dean
From South leave A5086 at junction marked Ullock (stone bus shelter) in Ullock turn left and follow road throught to Dean continue through Dean (passing School) trail field around 1/2 mile on your left.
From North leave A5086 at Deanscales follow signs to Dean, at school turn right and follow above
From North leave A66 at Brigham follow signs to Greysouthen (Greencastle Brow) head south towards Dean trail field on your right.
Dearham
From A595 follow signs to Maryport (A594) follow road passing Dovenby heading up the hill take a right turn follow the lane until you come to Old Mill Public House take a sharp right up the hill follow the road over the bridge trail field on your right
Sandale/Snow Hill
Take a right turn at the Castle Inn Hotel following sign posts for Caldbeck follow the road passing Uldale climbing up the hill onto the fell take a sharp left turn at junction with B5299 Snow Hill on your left continue on to Dale Side take a right follow road to Sandale Mast.
Bower House/Low Place
From south turn off at Duddon Bridge followsigns to Ulpha turn left at The Almhouses and follw signs to Eskdale crour right crossing Birker Moor follow road through to Eskdale heading out of Eskdale Bower House is on your left trail field just before, Low Place junction is on your right before Bower House
From north turn off through Gosforth follow the sign to Eskdale trail field on right just past Bower House pub continue on and turn left
